Sir Chris Wormald to enter House of Lords as Crossbench Peer
Sir Chris served as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service between December 2024 and February 2026 under Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government.
In a remarkable thirty-five-year career in the civil service, Sir Chris served as Principal Private Secretary to two Secretaries of State (Estelle Morris and Charles Clarke) and held Director General roles at the Department of Communities and Local Government and at the Cabinet Office. In 2012 he was made Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education and then in 2016 became Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care. Sir Chris received a Knighthood in 2017 for public service.
Sir Chris's nomination to the peerage is expected to be formalised and conferred by the King in due course. St John's warmly congratulates him on this prestigious nomination.
