Congratulations to Professor Gillian Rose, Professorial Fellow in Geography, on being awarded the prestigious Victoria Medal by the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers.

The RGS-IBG Victoria Medal recognises “conspicuous merit in research in geography" and has been given annually since 1902 in honour of the late Queen Victoria.

Professor Rose is this year's recipient of the Victoria Medal in recognition of her outstanding contributions to cultural geography.

" Gillian is one of the most significant human geographers of her generation with a remarkable range of contributions that have impacted the discipline and the social sciences more generally. Her work has been hugely influential across cultural and feminist geographies, visual culture and methodologies. " The Royal Geographical Society

Speaking of her award, Professor Rose said:

" I'm deeply honoured to be awarded the Victoria Medal. My work in cultural, feminist, urban and digital geographies focusses on the ways that geographical knowledges are produced and the effects that they have in the world, a task that seems ever more necessary in the current era of multiple local and planetary crises. I look forward to finding continuing inspiration for this effort from the wonderful colleagues and students that the discipline of geography attracts. "

Professor Rose joins a distinguished list of Victoria Medal holders, notable among which is her St John's colleague, Professor Linda McDowell, who won the award in 2008.

The award will be presented at a ceremony on Monday 2 June 2025.
